Color study (red + silver plant pairings)

Current temp: 56° F @ 8:11am PST | High/Low: 65°/53° – Cloudy today with no rain in the forecast, but let’s be honest, it’s rounding the bend into late October in the PNW, so it’s mizzling out there

Here are three moments I’m loving in the garden right now (and feeling not a wee bit proud of since a) I think subtle repetition of color patterns can be hard to do, but are super sophisticated and pleasing to the senses and 2) historically, I’ve been red-averse. There are no red apparel items in my closet (though pink is making its way in, thank you, Greta Gerwig). There is NO red in my house barring a ukulele, Chinese fortune envelopes, and my favorite non-fiction book — a Merriam Webster Dictionary).

front to back: Begonia I didn’t write it down in a pot, Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra) and Japanese Maple in the ground— the Maple was here when we moved in

Maroon-colored cut leaf maple (Acer) feathering over silvery lamb's ear (Stacy's)

left to right: Japanese cutleaf Maple, Lamb’s ears (Stachys byzantina) — both were planted here in the yard when we moved in and the combo, at first too contrasty for me, has obviously “grown” (groan!) on me

Pink snowberries (Symphoricarpos)in front of silvery Cypress foliage

left to right: Cypress, pink snowberry (probably a Proven Winners Symphoricarpos Proud Berry® - Coralberry) — both picked up locally and planted by me (or more likely holes dug by the hubs)
