Here’s a great project, courtesy of none other than This Old House, for bonding with Dad this Father’s Day:
build your own eco-friendly bird feeder.
For anyone who has a some one-liter bottles of tonic water floating around, a jigsaw or a man who’s been wanting a jigsaw, this is a great way to get connect with your kids, give them practice in problem solving, following step-by-step instructions, spatial reasoning, practical construction skills, self-efficacy and ecology.

Nice bird feeder project for a DIY’er and his son. I built a hummingbird feeder out of recycled materials with my son recently, and we had a great time. He gets a lot of satisfaction from watching the hummers feed from it. If you are interested, here’s a link to the plans http://blog.newenglandbirdhouse.com/?p=448.
Hi, Bill - as a New Englander, I bet the folks at This Old House hold a special place in your heart! I think you’re totally right about the kind of satisfaction we can get, and teach our kids about, when we make things with our own hands. Whether it’s building a bird feeder or house, baking something from scratch, or tending a garden! Thanks for your visit and comment.
